Wax Apple Plant Description
The wax apple plant (Syzygium samarangense), also known as water apple, Java apple, or rose apple, is an evergreen tropical tree belonging to the myrtle family. It typically grows 5–15 meters tall with a dense, rounded canopy and smooth, light-gray bark.
The leaves are large, glossy, and leathery, arranged opposite each other on the stems. They are elliptical in shape and emit a mild aromatic scent when crushed.
In season, the tree produces clusters of creamy white or pale yellow flowers with numerous showy stamens, giving them a fluffy appearance. These flowers develop into the plant’s distinctive fruits.
The wax apple fruit is bell- or pear-shaped with smooth, shiny skin that looks waxy—hence the name. The fruits are typically light green, pink, red, or deep maroon, depending on the variety. The flesh is crisp, juicy, and mildly sweet, often with a refreshing, watery texture. Most fruits contain either a small seed or no seed at all.
Highly tolerant of heat and humidity, the wax apple plant thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, preferring well-drained soil and full sun. It is commonly grown in home gardens and orchards for its ornamental value and abundant fruit.
